What We Are Looking For
NOTE: WE ARE CURRENTLY CLOSED TO ALL POETRY SUBMISSIONS UNTIL NOVEMBER 2008.
Fiction and Poetry
We accept fiction and poetry on almost any subject and in any genre. We will from time to time publish special genre editions,
so if your work is accepted it may be held over until publication.
We are looking for fiction that is engaging and thought provoking; it could be a touch humorous or be a tear-jerker, maybe it's loaded with politics, or maybe it's just something you wanted to get off your chest.
Whatever it is, it must be well-written and grab us from the outset. A story that jumps out at us from the start will do well.
NB: We are in short supply of good fiction at the moment, so please send us your best stories.
None of the following is acceptable for The Ranfurly Review: blatant pornography, overt
racism, or gratuitous violence. Sex, violence, and race/religion stories are fine but ONLY if they are within the context of the piece.
We do not accept previously published work. Ever. We reserve the right to reject a piece, even after acceptance, if it is found to have been published elsewhere. We do run checks.
Simultaneous submissions are acceptable provided you agree to let us know
if the piece is accepted elsewhere first.
Generic simultaneous submissions that are mass emailed to other journals and e-zines, WILL BE REJECTED OUT OF HAND. If you follow this discourteous practice we will not even grace you with a response. Sorry to be so harsh about this particular guideline, but if a writer can't be bothered to research and pitch a piece on an individual basis, then we won't be bothered to read it.
How To Submit
FICTION/NOVEL EXTRACTS - please submit a maximum of 2 short stories at any
one time. 701 to 5000 words each.
FLASH FICTION - please submit up to 3 flash fiction pieces at any one time.
Max 700 words each.
POETRY - CURRENTLY CLOSED - Poetry submissions will NOT be read until November.
Please submit up to 5 poems with each submission. (Any length). Small collections will do better.
COVER ART/PHOTOGRAPHY - We are always on the lookout for artwork/photography to be used in our magazine. We have a commissioned photographer for the front covers, but if you still want to submit something, please email us first to discuss your submission. We only have four covers per year and limited space to fill between them, so resources are limited.
ILLUSTRATIONS - We may consider the use of illustrations in future issues to accompany specific stories or a series of poems. If you want to be considered for this, please email us to discuss this first. Please do not send us work.
We regret we are not currently in a position to accept any unsolicited art or photographic submissions. We hope to be able to included a dedicated art/photographic section in the e-zine in the future, but not yet. Why not join the mailing list to stay informed of all policy changes.
What To Submit
Submissions should be sent ONLY as attachments. Any
formatting you require should be included in your attachment.
DOC and RTF files only. (No TXT, PDF, WPS or MCW).
Any submissions sent in the body of an email will be rejected out of hand. This policy change has been made because we simply cannot read from the screen any longer, and refuse to format work that has been sent to us.
Therefore, please double-space your submissions (poetry excluded), and use Times New Roman, 12 pt font.
The deadline for submissions is one month prior to the publish date of that issue.
So for example, subs for the summer issue (July) should be time-stamped before
midnight on May 30th.
Please send a very short third person biography with your submission (2 or 3 lines at most). Feel free to
mention any websites that are pertinent to your work.
If your day job is in Accounts, please don't tell us about it. We reserve the right to edit bios that are sent in.
If you want your work published under a pseudonym, please let us know in your submission.
Where To Submit
Please send all submissions to:
submissions@ranfurly-review.co.uk
We aim to respond within four weeks of submission. If you have not heard anything by six weeks, please drop us an email.
If your piece is accepted for publication, it may be subject to a small amount editorial
control. Any alterations will be minor and will normally only revolve around grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.
We do not believe in tampering with the original vision of a writer's work, and are conscious of this throughout the whole process. Any suggestions for improvement will be made in writing after acceptance.
Copyright & Reimbursement
The Ranfurly Review publishes under First Publication Rights only. All
copyrights revert to contributors upon publication.
This means that anything
accepted for publication must not have appeared anywhere before we publish
it. After we publish it, it's yours again.
Each issue is also archived into the Back Issue section, therefore as well as First Publication Rights, we also require Nonexclusive Online Archival Rights. This means our archiving does not inhibit other magazines publishing your work after us.
The Ranfurly Review is a non-profit e-zine, so we regret we are unable to pay
contributors at this time.
